Computer Basics & Microsoft Office

Course Description: 

Computer Basics and Microsoft Office class is a comprehensive course in business office practices with emphasis on industry standard computer operation and applications.  The course is designed for adult learners and uses computer based instruction with individualized or cooperative work/study groups. 

Students may learn the following  software applications:

  • Introduction to Computers
  • Windows XP
  • File Management
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, PowerPoint)
  • Microsoft Project 2002(Available in the morning section 8:00-12:00 p.m. only)
  • Publisher
  • Internet

Course Outline

Goal: 

Upon completion of the Computer Basics and Microsoft Office recommended components and dependent on demonstrated background and ability, students will be prepared to obtain office support or administrative employment with Bay Area companies.

Materials: 

Notebook, pen, computer compatible earphones.

Certificates: 

Software certificates are awarded to students who demonstrate an effort to learn and problem solve, accurately complete required projects, and pass industry and performance based assessments.  Course completion certificates are awarded to students who complete course goals including the employment preparation requirements.

Course Content: 

Upon enrollment in class, students develop a training plan based on their career goals, learning objectives, and selections from the course offerings, which follow:
Introduction to Computers, Operating Systems,

Networks, Internet
:  Includes basic concepts of operation, maintenance, data storage and retrieval, file management and sharing.  Uses industry standard equipment.  Required for course certificate.  40 hours.  Windows XP, Intranet, & Introduction to Web Browsers (Internet Explorer 6), E-mail (Outlook) & Web Based E-mail (Hotmail & Yahoo).

Word Processing
:  Introductory or Advanced textbook.  Includes document creation, formatting, proofreading, editing, Web integration, linking and embedding.  Advanced course, recommended for most students, includes mail merge and tables.  50 – 200 hours.  Word 2003.

Spreadsheets
:  Introductory or Advanced textbook.  Includes financial report creation, formatting, editing, charting, calculations, formulas, Web integration, linking and embedding.  50 – 150 hours.  Excel 2003.

Database
:  Introductory or Advanced textbook.  Includes database creation, formatting, editing, relationships, queries, linking and embedding.  50 – 100 hours.  Access 2003.

Presentation Graphics
:  Introductory or Advanced textbook.  Includes presentation creation, design, multimedia, proofreading, editing, Web integration, linking and embedding.  50 – 100 hours.  PowerPoint 2003.

Time/Task  Management
:   Includes calendaring, contacts, email, tasks, journals, meetings.  50 hours.  Outlook 2000.

Web Page Design Using FrontPage
:  Includes designing, creating, editing personal and company Web pages.  100-270 hours.  FrontPage 2000 & HTML/Web Design.

Introduction to Web Browsers
:  Typical applications of browser programs: information search, URLs, links, personal preferences, posting information to sites.  20 hours.  Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox.

E-Mail
:  Setting up and using an e-mail account.  Address books, file attachment, business protocol.  10 hours.  Hotmail, Yahoo, and gMail.

Introduction to Page Layout and Design
:  Includes document design, creation, formatting, graphics terminology.  50 hours.  Publisher 2003.

Employment Preparation
:  Resume, portfolio, application and interview technique development.  30 hours.  Required for course certificate. 

Additional Information

After completing your course work you may want to consider pursuing your Microsoft Office Specialist certification.  Prove your skill level to future employers with your certification.  By passing one or more MS Office exams you can be certified by Microsoft as either a core or expert user.
